Tulsa: History, Legacy & Community-Led Revitalization

A City Built Twice—and Ready to Rise Again

Tulsa, Oklahoma is a city rooted in history: brilliance born from wealth, followed by destruction and systemic inequities. The Greenwood District—known as Black Wall Street—was once a beacon of self-sustaining Black excellence, entrepreneurship, and innovation. In 1921, that legacy was violently erased by one of the worst acts of racial terrorism in U.S. history. What followed was not only physical destruction, but decades of disinvestment, redlining, and policy-driven exclusion.

But Tulsa’s story doesn’t end there.

Our Commitment: Reclaim. Rebuild. Re-imagine.

We’re not here to romanticize history—we’re here to finish the work that was interrupted. We believe Tulsa is not just a site of tragedy, but a launching pad for bold infrastructure led by the people who have been traditionally excluded.

Our work in Tulsa is grounded in community voice, intergenerational healing, and innovative infrastructure redesign.

Our Revitalization Strategy: COMMUNITY by Design

We use our Community by Design framework to innovate the systems that impact daily life—from education to entrepreneurship, from wellness to workforce. Our Tulsa programs include:

  • Innovation & Impact Hub in Downtown Tulsa
A youth- and community-led space for training, co-creation, and economic growth. This includes tech access, arts programs, mental health support, and small business incubation.

  • Collective Voice Audit
A participatory process to gather and amplify what the community truly wants—not what outsiders assume is needed.

  • Capacity Partner Network
We collaborate with grassroots organizations, nonprofits, educators, and local leaders to redistribute resources and deepen impact.

  • Collective Equity Fund
An initiative to support community-led projects with flexible, unrestricted capital—fueled by local donors, anchor institutions, and national partners.

Our Belief

“Greenwood was never just a neighborhood. It was a blueprint. Tulsa has the chance to build it again—but this time, with community ownership at the center.”
